Axar Patel clobbered Kyle Mayers straight over his head for a six – the fifth hit of his unconquered innings, as India took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.

India scripted a sensational series-clinching two-wicket win over the West Indies, thanks to Axar Patel's whirlwind 64* off just 35 balls. The left-handed all-rounder pummeled the opposition with five sixes and three fours, taking India home with two balls to spare in the second One-Day International on Sunday. At one point, India were down to 205 for five with a daunting 312-run target to chase. But Axar bailed the team out of a precarious position, adding 51 off 33 balls with Deepak Hooda, who scored 33, and bringing down the equation to six runs off the last three balls. He clobbered Kyle Mayers straight over his head for a six – the fifth hit of his unconquered innings, as India gained an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Fans were lavish in their praise for the all-rounder and Rohit Sharma also shared a special message for him in Gujarati. "Woah. that was some performance from team India last night. Bapu badhu Saru che," tweeted the regular India skipper. "Badhu saru che rohit bhai. thanks.. cheers" responded Axar.

Shikhar Dhawan, who is leading the team in absence of Rohit, also lavished praise on Axar's heroics. "The way Axar played was amazing. Our domestic and IPL cricket keeps us ready as we play in front of big crowds. As Axar said, he's done it multiple times in IPL. That brings a big stage," said Dhawan on his team's two-wicket win.

Axar said he used the experience he gained from the Indian Premier League (IPL). He was a part of Delhi Capitals, who finished fifth in the recent 10-team tournament. "It's very special. It came at a crucial time and also helped the team to win the series," the 28-year-old said after collecting the player-of-the-match award.

Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson also scored half-centuries but it was Axar who swept the home side in the final powerplay. India needed 105 runs when Axar went in to bat during the 39th over.

With his match-winning display, Axar also went past MS Dhoni and Yusuf Pathan in the unique club of Indian batters who have got more than 3 sixes in a successful ODI run-chase, when batting at No. 7 or lower. Dhoni had hit 3 sixes in a successful run-chase against Zimbabwe in 2015, while Pathan had achieved the feat on two occasions – against South Africa in 2011 and Ireland in 2011.

"When I went out, I aimed for 10-11 an over. We thought it could be done because of our IPL experience. We just needed to remain calm and keep the intensity up. This is my first ODI (series) after nearly five years. I would want to continue performing like this for my team," added Axar.
