“He was known to the victim and used to tame mules along with her father in the same village. In the initial investigations, it has been found that he was in a one-sided love affair with her 17-year-old elder sister. He was a jilted lover as her sister had refused his proposals in the past after which he committed the crime out of rage,” deputy inspector general, Garhwal range, Ajay Rautela told HT over phone from Uttarkashi.

“So far it has been found that he committed the crime alone and didn’t have any accomplice. He was of the same community as the girl. The legal procedures of his arrest are still on,” he added.

Tension had prevailed in the area after the girl’s body was found lying on a culvert in the village on Saturday morning. Lead by some Hindu-right wing organisations, the residents held rallies demanding ouster of people coming from outside the state for employment there. Markets were kept closed for two days in protest of the incident.

Police denied the involvement of any outsider in the incident.

Another police official privy to investigations of the case told HT on condition of anonymity that in the investigations, it was found that the accused had threatened to abduct the girl he was in love with and the tense girl went away to her grandmother’s house.

“When he came to her house and didn’t find her, he out of rage abducted the 11-year-old and raped her before strangling her to death,” he said.

“No outsider is involved in the incident as earlier claimed by the locals,” he added.
