Trump announced the US will actively shape Venezuela's future leadership after Maduro and his wife's capture, who are being sent to New York to face charges.
US President Donald Trump asserted on January 3 that the US intends to take an active role in shaping the future leadership and economic direction of Venezuela, following the “capture” of President Nicolás Maduro and his spouse, Cilia Flores. The couple, as per the President, is set to be transported to New York to face criminal charges.
In an interview with Fox News shortly after the operation, Trump underscored the commitment of the US to be significantly involved in the political transition of Venezuela.
“We'll be involved in it very much as to who will govern the country. We can't take a chance in letting somebody else run and just take over what he left, or left off,” Trump told Fox News.
Trump says Maduro and Flores being shipped to NY
Trump further confirmed that Maduro and Flores were taken aboard a ship following their capture and are currently being transported to New York, where both individuals have been indicted.
Both Maduro and his spouse have received indictments in New York.
Trump suggested that the United States will also have a substantial involvement in Venezuela’s oil industry.
“We have the greatest oil companies in the world, the biggest, the greatest, and we're going to be very much involved in it,” he told the US-based outlet.
Trump confirms no American casualties
Trump recounted overseeing the military operation from his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida during the phone call.
“I was able to watch it in real time, and I watched every aspect of it, and I listened to the communication between, you know, where we were in Florida and out in the field in Venezuela,” the POTUS said.
Trump commended the US forces involved and emphasized the sophisticated equipment utilized in the overnight operation.
He confirmed that there were no US fatalities during the operation.
“To have a few injuries, but no death on our side, is really amazing,” Trump said.
