CJP protest LIVE: Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk on Wednesday claimed that the Centre had assured him it would "positively consider" the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan as part of efforts to ensure accountability over the alleged NEET paper leak.

In a letter addressed to Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh, Wangchuk said the assurance was given during their visit to him in hospital, where they urged him to end his indefinite fast.

He also said the government had assured it would consider adequate compensation for the families of students who died by suicide following the alleged paper leak, while urging the Centre to guarantee that no legal or retaliatory action would be taken against student protesters. Wangchuk said he would end his fast only if such an assurance was provided, failing which he would continue his indefinite hunger strike.

CJP protest LIVE: Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk on Wednesday said he will end his fast if government assures of no legal action against protestors.

In a letter to the government, he said, "I respectfully request an unequivocal assurance from the Government that none of the young protesters will face any punitive or retaliatory legal action for participating in this movement. Their only "offence" has been to raise their voice for a fair and accountable education system."

"If such an assurance is given, I shall end my fast with faith that the Government has heard not only my appeal but also the aspirations of lakhs of young Indians. In the absence of such an assurance, I will be forced to continue my fast indefinitely. I also hope that there will be no further use of excessive police force to repress the movement."

CJP protest LIVE: Medanta hospital on Wednesday shared an update regarding the health of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, saying he is “stable” and “oriented.”

The hospital added that Wangchuk is being treated by a multi-disciplinary team of doctors and all treatment to him is being administered with his informed consent

CJP protest LIVE: Cockroach Janta Party spokesperson Saurav Das on Wednesday said that if the government wants to talk, they must come to the people.

He said that a "janta darbar" is being held at Jantar Mantar, adding that they were called on by union minister JP Nadda to his residence.

“When Delhi Police invited us to Minister JP Nadda’s residence today, we categorically declined. We are not going to anyone’s closed doors or private homes.”

“If security is a concern, we are open to a neutral venue near Jantar Mantar. But the government must show genuine intent to ACCEPT our demands, not waste our time with meaningless photo-ops.”

CJP protest LIVE: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday dismissed a petition seeking the constitution of a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the removal of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk from the CJP protest site at Jantar Mantar to Safdarjung Hospital.

A bench of Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia observed that Wangchuk's wife had already approached the Court over the incident and, by an order dated July 21, had been permitted to shift him from Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta.

In view of the earlier proceedings, the same relief could not be sought again in the present petition.

CJP protest LIVE: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued notice on a petition seeking an SIT probe into the alleged police brutality during the CJP protest.

The court also directed the authorities to preserve all relevant records, including CCTV footage and videography, if any, in accordance with the SOPs issued by the Delhi Police and the Union government.

A bench comprising Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela sought responses from the Centre and the Delhi Police, and listed the matter for further hearing on September 11.

"Issue notice. In the meantime, we direct that the relevant record in relation to the incident as mentioned in the writ petition, including the CCTV footage and videography, if any, shall be preserved in accordance with the SOP issued by the Delhi Police or by the Union of India. List on 11.9," the court said in its order.

CJP protest LIVE: Responding to the Delhi Police's objection that the petition was not filed by the injured persons and that the petitioners could instead approach the Magistrate for appropriate relief, the Court observed that the present matter was "not an isolated individual incident."

It remarked that had it been an isolated occurrence, the police's contention that the aggrieved persons could file private complaints before the Magistrate may have been justified.

CJP protest LIVE: Opposing the petitions, the Delhi Police contended that the so-called peaceful protest did not remain peaceful and that there are videos showing police personnel being injured.

"The so-called peaceful agitation did not remain peaceful. There are videos showing that police personnel were injured. The crowd became unruly and resorted to violence, and violence cannot be permitted. There are videos showing members of the crowd throwing stones.

"People want to take advantage of this situation. If they have any grievance, they should approach the magistrate's court for registration of an FIR. The petitions do not state that they have availed the remedy under Section 156(3). The true facts are not being placed before the court, and the claims are based on videos circulating on social media.

"Though the petitions may appear, at first blush, to warrant consideration, they are based on suppression of facts. These are publicity-seeking petitions aimed at gaining limelight. The persons who were allegedly injured have not come forward. Therefore, the petitions do not warrant the issuance of notice. They have been filed only to hog the limelight and seek publicity," Raju submitted.

CJP protest LIVE: Senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan said that a large number of individuals participating in the police action were not in uniform and accused Additional DCP Sandeep Lamba of physically assaulting a woman standing on the sidelines, urging the court to summon the officer and hold him accountable.

Referring to videos purportedly depicting the incident, he alleged indiscriminate use of tear gas, lathi-charge and physical assault, including against women, mothers and family members present at the protest.

He claimed to have reviewed over 100 videos documenting instances of excessive force and argued that judicial intervention was necessary to prevent such conduct from becoming normalised.

CJP protest LIVE: Senior advocate N Hariharan submitted that the protest started peacefully but what happened thereafter was something “unimaginable including brutality of the largest measure possible.”

“No single instance to show that a warning has to be given, no whistle. Nothing of this sort happened, and the force which is to be used, it has to be proportionate to the cause. It is retributive in nature, and they were unarmed people, and they exercised force against the police forces there. This kind of situation, where you were beaten black and blue, ladies in the protest were molested and those officers who are identifiable — committing cognisable offences— order of registration of FIR be issued, and inquiry be made into the entire incident. More than 90 people sustained injuries; the list is going up,” Hariharan added.

Meanwhile, Senior advocate Vikas Singh said the assembly, which had grown in size by July 20, remained peaceful throughout, pointing out that the authorities had not alleged that the gathering turned violent at any stage. Singh alleged that the police, along with several persons in civil clothes, attacked the demonstrators without provocation and till date there is no allegation that the protesters had resorted to violence.

CJP protest LIVE: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday began hearing two petitions seeking an SIT probe into the alleged excessive use of force by the Delhi Police against protesters during the CJP's march.

The petitions also seek the preservation of CCTV footage from the incident, the production of deployment and operational records, disclosure of orders authorising the use of force, registration of FIRs against the officers involved, and the initiation of disciplinary proceedings.

You have shown that this fight is bigger than any one person and that students deserve justice. But right now, we need you to take care of your health.

CJP protest LIVE: Cockroach Janta Party on Wednesday claimed that Delhi Police has “abandoned” all duties at Jantar Mantar as site sees influx of protestors.

Taking to X and sharing a video that purportedly shows protestors doing a security check at entry gates, the handle of ‘Cockroach is Back’ said, “As thousands stream into Jantar Mantar, Delhi Police has abandoned all security duties!”

“Student volunteers are running checks at the front gate while the bag-scanning machine at the back gate has been quietly removed. Police are completely recklessly negligent.”

CJP protest LIVE: Amid the ongoing student protest in the country, union defence minister Rajnath Singh called it a matter of “serious concern”, adding that it is extremely unfortunate that “some people” are trying to use students and youth as political tools.

“The ongoing protests in Delhi are a matter of serious concern. It is extremely unfortunate that some people are trying to use our students and youth as political tools to serve their own vested interests. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, our government remains fully committed to fulfilling the aspirations of students and young people and ensuring their welfare," news agency PTI reported.
