Thackeray brothers protest: Uddhav Thackeray of Shiv Sena (UBT) and Raj Thackeray of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) led a protest rally in Mumbai, calling for the removal of chief election commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. State leaders of the Congress and the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) also joined the march, which started from Metro Cinema and covered a short distance to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters in south Mumbai....Read More
The march, dubbed the ‘Virat Garjana Morcha’ (Grand Roar March), saw participants demand the removal or resignation of the CEC over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
Organisers prohibited party flags at the protest. Participants and supporters were allowed to carry only the national tricolour.
The agitation against CEC has emerged as a key national campaign against alleged irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls.
On Friday, a large number of people gathered at Mumbai's Shivaji Park to demand Kumar's resignation at a rally organised by Abhijit Dipke-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).
This marks the third joint appearance by the Thackeray cousins, who were rivals until recently, since they decided to put their differences aside.
Their first joint move was to celebrate the withdrawal of a government resolution seeking to make Hindi compulsory in Maharashtra's schools. They later came together to protest the NEET paper leak. Now, they have joined hands to demand the CEC's removal.
Delhi to also see protests over ECI today
The Delhi Police has deployed around 5,000 personnel in New Delhi ahead of two protest marches scheduled to take place from India Gate to Jantar Mantar on Sunday. The police have refused permission for both marches and are preparing for a large turnout as the protests in the national capital enter their third consecutive day.
Two marches have been planned for Sunday. A Citizens’ March is scheduled to begin at 3 pm, followed by an Indian Youth Congress march along the same route at 5 pm.
At least 1,000 protesters were detained on Friday as they attempted to reach Jantar Mantar during demonstrations against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The police have also filed three FIRs against protesters over the recent demonstrations. Meanwhile, three complaints alleging sexual harassment of women protesters and journalists by police personnel have been received and referred to the Crime Branch for investigation.
