According to the police, the woman was married and had two minor children. The man was unmarried and was a vegetable trader. The police said the man was distantly related to the woman.

The police added that eyewitnesses saw them sitting on the railway tracks behind an engineering college in Muradnagar and speaking to each other for a while.

“There are eyewitnesses who saw them sitting and talking. They were crying. As soon as a train headed for Ghaziabad from Meerut arrived, both of them jumped in front of it and were run over. Their bodies were dragged a couple of hundred metres over the tracks and were badly mutilated as a result,” Vaibhav Krishna, senior superintendent of police, said.

The police said that the woman had been staying with her parents for the past one year due to marital discord. Her estranged husband was a vegetable trader as well. They added that the 25-year-old lived with his uncle in the same locality as the woman.

The bodies of the two persons were later identified with the help of the clothes they were wearing and their belongings, after their families arrived around 1pm. The police said that the two were distantly related to each other, but their families declined to comment upon the possible motive of the suicide pact. They also refused to file a police complaint.

“The family neither disclosed any motive behind the incident nor filed any police complaint. The bodies were sent for an autopsy after the panchnama formalities were conducted,” an officer from Muradnagar police station said.
