Vishvajit More clinches India’s first Greco-Roman silver at Under-23 World Wrestling Championships
He came agonisingly close to gold, losing 12–13 to Georgia’s Koba Karumidze in a nail-biting final.
Vishvajit More created history by winning silver in the men’s 55kg Greco-Roman category at the Under-23 World Wrestling Championships. He came agonisingly close to gold, losing 12–13 to Georgia’s Koba Karumidze in a thrilling final.

A two-time bronze medallist, More had become the first Indian Greco-Roman wrestler to reach the final. With his silver, he is now the only Indian Greco-Roman wrestler to have won two medals at the championship.
More was relentless throughout his campaign at the U23 Championships. He began with a 10-8 win over Mexico’s Isaac Marin Mata. In the quarter-final, he faced Iran’s Armin Shamsipour, the reigning U20 world champion, who suffered a shoulder injury after being on the receiving end of a four-point throw by More. Shamsipour eventually lost 1-8.
Next, he faced Russia’s Malik Gigiev, whom he defeated 6-4 in another closely fought contest, securing his place in the final.
Women remain in contention
In women’s wrestling, India put two athletes into the semifinals scheduled for tomorrow, with both Vaishnavi Patil (65 kg) and Amruta Pujari (72 kg) winning their earlier rounds.
India remains in the hunt for another medal as K. Komal (59 kg) qualified for the bronze medal match. In the 68 kg division, Mansi Lather exited the tournament after a narrow 9-10 loss to Laura Godino in the quarterfinals.
