Update: The fire reported in Omaha, Nebraska, on Saturday morning was a controlled burn, according to local residents and witnesses.
Several people took to social media to confirm that the fire was part of a controlled burn after photos and videos of the blaze began circulating online.
One resident reported, "Controlled burn I found out. We just happen to be driving by."
Another added, "It was a controlled burn by the Gretna and Omaha fire department."
A third resident wrote, "Pretty sure this is a controlled burn by multiple departments- they burned it down due to sex trafficking."
The claim about the reason for the burn has not been independently verified.

Initial report: A large fire is burning in Omaha, Nebraska, near 144th Street and I-80, just north of Hardee's. Witnesses reported that the fire appears to be at or near The Inn & Suites.
Witness reports
Photos and videos shared from the area showed a large plume of smoke rising into the sky.
One witness wrote, "I saw that smoke. Wondered what was burning."
Another added, "Driving into Omaha to watch the husker game came across this fire at The Inn & Suites, 144th and 80 just north of the Hardee’s."
Recent Omaha fires
In early September 2026, a house fire was reported near 60th and Hamilton streets. Firefighters found heavy fire in the basement. A family of five was displaced, while their dog died after the owners attempted to rescue it. Damage was estimated at approximately $15,000, with most of it confined to the basement. The cause remains under investigation. The Red Cross and Nebraska Humane Society assisted the family.
In late August 2026, a building fire was reported near 102nd and I streets in southwest Omaha. No injuries were reported.
